CLHS
UNIFORM/DRESS POLICY 2019-2020
This Dress Code is designed to promote a school climate that is positive, safe, and free of distractions and disruptions. Students are expected to dress in a professional and appropriate manner. In order to meet these expectations, we have established guidelines to identify clothing that is contrary to this policy and, therefore, not permitted in school during the academic school day. Students who violate the policy will be asked to change, or will be prohibited from returning to class.

1. Any shirt or top with Civic Leadership High School (CLHS) logo
(including, but not limited to, CLHS team or organization “gear”). Note:
For students who bought the PSA
windbreaker during the 2017-2018 school year, they may wear that jacket for the
time that they attend Civic Leadership High School.
2.
Approved khaki or navy blue pants, shorts, or skirt (see chart above for
description).
In Colder
Weather:
●
You must meet the basic, minimum
requirements, but you may layer on the approved CLHS sweater, fleece,
windbreaker, or sweatshirt.
●
We strongly suggest you “layer” during the school day.
General
Uniform Guidelines:
●
All tops must have a Civic
Leadership High School top as the outer layer of clothing, and this top must
have sleeves. Any top with buttons
should be buttoned up to the neck.
●
Head coverings of any kind,
including but not limited to, hats, caps, scarves, bandanas, curlers, masks,
visors, kerchiefs, athletic sweatbands, earmuffs, or hoods shall not be worn,
carried, hung on belts, worn around the neck, or kept in the classroom during
regular school hours. However, head coverings worn as part of a student’s
religious beliefs are permitted.
●
Spiked or studded jewelry, oversized
or multi-finger rings, belts or chains or any other articles of attire with
spikes or studs attached, “name” or other oversized metal belt buckles, or any
other items of clothing or jewelry that may present a safety hazard to the
student, other students or staff, shall not be worn.
●
Sunglasses, goggles, headphones,
earbuds, or other electronic devices not prescribed by a medical professional
for educational purposes shall not be worn, displayed, or carried during school
hours in classrooms, hallways, or other areas in the school.
●
For Physical Education, students
must change in the gym locker room just prior to gym class and immediately
after gym class. No student should be in the hall in gym clothing, other than
in transit from the locker room to the gymnasium.
●
Students are expected to enter the
school building wearing uniform.
Special
Occasions
●
Field Trips - Students must wear
their uniforms on field trips unless specifically stated in the permission
slip.
●
School Events - Dances and
sporting events do not require an official uniform. Students who are
performing, receiving recognition, or representing the school to the outside
community should not wear jeans or other inappropriate items of clothing.
●
Dress Down Days: At regular intervals and for fundraising,
CLHS will hold dress down days. Students
who have met the dress down requirements may wear something other than their
uniform, so long as the clothing is appropriate for a learning environment. If
you are not sure if it is a dress down day, wear
your uniform to school and bring your dress down outfit with you.
On any school day, the following are
prohibited:
●
Attire or accessories that contain
messages or images that would tend to be offensive or disruptive to the
educational process, including racist messages or images; sexist messages or
images; messages or images promoting the use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco;
profane or pornographic messages or images; messages that incite violence or
constitute “fighting words;” or attire or accessories that promote or signify
gang affiliation.
●
See-through clothing, clothing
revealing bare midriffs, tank tops, halter tops, tube tops, leggings/tights,
undershirts or underpants worn as outer garments, clothing with plunging
necklines (front or back), sleeveless shirts, exposed clothing made of spandex
material, or clothing worn in such a manner as to expose undergarments.
●
Bare feet, open toed shoes
(including but not limited to flip flops or slides), bedroom slippers,
moccasins, roller blades, roller-skates, or footwear that mars floors, causes
excessive noise, or creates a safety hazard.
Uniform Violations:
●
Every day, students should be
wearing uniform. If they are unable to
be in uniform due to circumstances beyond their control, they need to advocate
for themselves, and the CLHS staff will make every effort to work with the
student to get him or her into uniform and ready for the school day.
●
Whether or not a student’s
clothing is acceptable is a decision that will be made by the CLHS
Administration. Failure to maintain dress code without just cause is an issue
of insubordination, and can lead to consequences. When a Civic Leadership High School staff
member addresses a student regarding dress code, the student should correct the
issue.
